Smashed KURT COBAIN Guitar Sells For $100,000
December 29, 2008The Pulse of Radio reports that a smashed guitar that once belonged to late NIRVANA frontman Kurt Cobain was sold for $100,000, according to the Associated Press. The sale was confirmed by Jacob McMurray, curator at the Experience Music Project, who said that the axe was displayed at the Seattle exhibit for a period of time. The private buyer of the Fender Mustang was not named, while the seller was identified as a punk rock musician named Sluggo from New York bands HULLABALOO and the GRANNIES.
McMurray said, "It's a really cool-looking guitar because it's smashed and held together with duct tape and Kurt Cobain wrote on it."
Sluggo obtained the guitar after a NIRVANA gig in New Jersey, before the band became successful. Cobain smashed the guitar during the show and needed one for the next gig. He happened to be staying at the apartment of Sluggo, who offered one of his guitars in exchange for the smashed one, also asking Cobain to sign it.
The price is the second highest for a piece of NIRVANA memorabilia. Cobain's Mosrite Gospel Mark IV guitar sold at a 2006 auction for $131,000.
